UK: Domestic abusers to be added to violent and sex offender register in new crackdown

Source: news.sky.com 2/20/23

The most dangerous domestic abusers will be recorded on the violent and sex offender register under new proposals aimed at better protecting the public.

Around 2.4 million people in England and Wales experienced domestic abuse in the last year, with around one in five homicides related to it, according to the Home Office.

Starting immediately, anyone jailed for 12 months or more for coercive control, including suspended sentences, will be placed on the violent and sex offender register.

This means they will have to tell police their name, any aliases and any addresses they stay at for more than a week.

lets just make a super list of every crime and call it the shaming list

UK has always mimicked the US! Even when the policies are bad.

I oppose the very idea of Registries. The Police cannot be trusted with this information, and in the hands of the public it becomes dangerous. Keeping some list of past deeds only acts as a barrier to new futures. Making it public only invites stigma and vigilantes.

America has attempted these, and has some of this is in place. There was a recent article posted here discussing Chicago area Police struggling to keep up with the workload of their various Registries. These additional Registries are as counterproductive as all Registries, and I suspect will be mostly ignored. In the mind of the public, there will always be only one “Real” registry”. The other Registries are just lists of people that the Police have a permanent excuse to harass…as much as they have time for.

Having said all that, however, I still cannot help but think that the more Registries that are created and the more people on them…the faster the idea dies. That has always been an inherent vulnerability of the idea, the more you use it, the more enemies to it you create. People will cheer in the streets at the creation and expansion of Registries…until they or someone they love is put on one. Then, all of a sudden, we need to think about these things more….

Ahhh…the thousands and thousands of Sextext messages teenagers send to each other daily. Imagine adding a couple thousand teenagers as lifetime registrants…a day. Imagine what happens after a year or two of that? Half a million or more teenagers, doomed to try to find their way through the life of a registrant. Can’t happen…Mom will applaud the decision to add your Sexting teen to the list…but when it comes to her own precious little darling. Yep, absolutely everybody’s life is totally disposable…any excuse to destroy will due…so long as it is only you and yours…never me and mine.

Of course, this will never happen. The State and the Police will treat this situation exactly like all criminal activities that involve millions of people…mostly ignore it. Grab a few, to ensure Karen that you’re on the job being tough on crime, but ignore the rest as much as possible.

Like the millions of people that were discovered with CP on their computer during the P2P sweeps. Grab 2 or 3%…throw the book at them…register them for life….then do NOTHING about the other one and half to two million+ people that were lucky enough to not be one of the ones they bothered with.

“Online Predators” are the same. Do a sting once or twice a year…round up a couple dozen, maybe hundred…then shut that down! Can’t have the cops rounding up hundreds or even thousands of these people Nationwide every month forever! Best to just do some headline grabbing stings a few times a year…round up a “Reasonable” number…shut the operation down and assume that all is well until it is time for more headlines.
